Preparation in England

Foundation programs in the UK are educational programs designed to prepare students academically and linguistically for university education. Through foundation programs, students improve their English level while gaining the opportunity to transfer to their desired field of study.

Preparatory Education in England

Foundation Program

Duration: 1 Year

The Foundation Program is a preparatory course designed for international students to enhance their academic and language proficiency before beginning their undergraduate studies in the UK. Throughout the program, students take courses in academic English, research techniques, university study skills, and core subjects relevant to their chosen field of study.

Upon successfully completing the Foundation Program and meeting the required academic standards, students progress to Year 1 of their undergraduate degree program.

The Foundation Program is an ideal starting point for international students who:

  • Do not yet meet the academic requirements for direct entry into an undergraduate program,

  • Wish to improve their English language proficiency,

  • Seek to adapt to the UK education system.

English Preparatory Programs

Universities in the UK offer two types of preparatory programs for students whose English language proficiency is not yet sufficient:

  • Foundation Programs are designed for students who completed their secondary education abroad or whose language proficiency does not yet meet the requirements for university study. Typically lasting 9–12 months, these programs include academic English instruction alongside core subjects relevant to the student's chosen field of study. Students who successfully complete the program become eligible to enroll directly in the first year of a UK university degree.
  • Pre-sessional Programs are intended for students who have received a conditional offer from a university but have not yet met the required score on an IELTS or equivalent language proficiency exam. Held before the start of the academic term—usually during the summer months—these intensive language courses are available in 6, 10, or 14-week formats. Students who successfully complete the program may enroll in the university without needing to take an IELTS exam.

In both types of programs, instruction is intensive, consisting of 20–25 hours of classes per week. The curriculum focuses primarily on academic writing, presentation techniques, critical reading, and research skills.

By the end of the program, students are expected to reach the B2–C1 level (IELTS 6.0–7.0).
