With its long-established universities, historic cities and affordable cost of living, Ukraine was once among the countries chosen by international students. However, due to the current security situation in the country, in-person summer programs for international students in Ukraine are not currently offered on a regular basis.
The latest travel advisories of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye also indicate that caution is needed regarding travel to Ukraine. For this reason, at NGGlobal we are not currently referring our students to in-person summer programs in Ukraine. On this page, students interested in Ukraine can find online options and alternative countries for summer school.
Summer schools, especially for young students, require a safe environment, regular supervision and an uninterrupted program. At present, these conditions cannot be reliably ensured in Ukraine.
Ukraine is located in Eastern Europe and is one of the largest countries in Europe by area. Its capital is Kyiv. The official language is Ukrainian. The currency is the Ukrainian hryvnia.
Ukraine is known for historic cities such as Kyiv, Lviv and Odesa, its long-established universities, its rich cultural heritage and its Black Sea coast. In the past, the country was an education hub that attracted strong interest from international students, especially in medicine and engineering.
There are online options for students interested in the Ukrainian language and culture:
Although online programs cannot fully replace an in-person summer school experience, they are a good option for starting to learn a language safely.
For students who want a summer school experience in Eastern and Central Europe, there are safe and affordable alternative countries:
Students interested in Ukrainian who want to learn a Slavic language can also achieve this goal in other countries. Polish summer courses in Poland and Czech summer courses in the Czech Republic are good options for an introduction to the Slavic language family. The similarities between Slavic languages also give an advantage to students who want to learn Ukrainian in the future.
In addition, some European universities offer summer programs and courses on Ukrainian language and culture. At NGGlobal, we keep you informed about these options.
Summer programs in Europe are usually held in June, July and August. Because places are limited and visa processes take time, it is advisable to apply at least three to six months before the program. Application deadlines for university summer schools usually close in the spring.
Since Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania and Malta are in the Schengen Area, Turkish citizens need a short-stay Schengen visa to attend summer programs in these countries. Since demand for visa appointments is high in the summer months, it is important to plan your application a few months before the program.
If conditions in Ukraine return to normal and safe travel becomes possible again, universities and language centers in the country are expected to resume summer programs for international students. At NGGlobal, we are closely following developments and will update this page to keep you informed when conditions allow.
